My boy Wiki. My mutt counterpart, the uptown boy always uptown, always downtown always in Chinatown always in my part of town, in the show or at the show with that energy, that pure NYC kid on some coquí-leprechaun swag. He just dropped his first debut, for free download, called Lil Me and it’s lit. It immediately funks up with “WikiFlag,” (think: 4 AM party coming to an end) but then it throws that celebration into the gutter, putting on serious faces while rapping about the dirty city, the non-gentrified, no-tourist NY, before the creative class gobbled it up. Collaborations speckle the whole thing: we’ve got Hak and Sporting Life, aka the other 2/3 of Ratking, as well as Skepta, King of Grime, and other rappers, mostly from NY. 18 tracks, 18 stories, in a city of 9 million stories. Shit gets deep on one verse, then light, call it happy, then dark, call it sad, complex syllables landing on the downbeat or on the upbeat, swerving lyrics that wobble around with hi-hats adorning almost every bar, but not overdone like we’re in Atlanta, cuz nah, we’re in NYC, Wiki’s NY, where we hit Ls, live with our mom (cuz the rent is too damn high), and drop out of Sunday school, but still keep it real.
