Over the past five years, Los Angeles label 100% Silk has been at the forefront of the changing face and sound of independent electronic music. From Ital’s Theme to the recently-released batch of Roche, Nackt, and Mr. Bronson cassettes, 100% Silk has evolved from the unfortunate “hipster house” tag to a straight-up, no-bullshit techno/house label, specializing in hypnotic, psychedelic sounds that can still jack up a dancefloor. Listeners who ditched the label when the rest of the blogosphere did have missed out on some great releases in contemporary electronic music. I could list them here, but the focus of this post is to highlight the best of this year’s Silk releases, from Bobby Browser’s Club Spinning EP to Cherushii’s Memory of Water tape. Not every release is included, but the songs here rank among the best work that’s come out of the label.
Enjoy the mix, and if they’re still available, check out the Silk Shop for any remaining tapes and vinyl.
