Seattle’s MOTOR releases tend to favor heady, experimental electronic projects that are more for the head knodders than the dancers. And I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, but when a new remix project for Portlander (or Portlandite?) Apartment Fox’s stellar Traded Structures EP comes across my desk, I’d say I was a little surprised by the disco funk leaning remix of “Orbit,” courtesy of fellow PDX-er Etbonz. This is a jam that’s just begging for you to strut out to the dancefloor and get weird, with a crisp beat, light synth touches that hit the right mark, and a deeply funky bassline throughout. Etbonz, one half of The Journeymen (fun fact: the other half of Journeymen, JPrez, also contributes a remix to this collection), takes the skeletal remains of the original and makes this all his own, more of a re-imagining or a yin to the original’s yang if you will.
