Lede: DJ Earl has dropped an unrelenting new single, “Open Up,” via Moveltraxx.
WHO: DJ Earl
WHAT: “Open Up,” the latest single from footwork mastermind DJ Earl of TEKLIFE via Moveltraxx.
WHY: DJ Earl is, without a doubt, a footwork trailblazer. Earlier this year, the Chicago native dropped W3RK DAT (via Suzi Analogue’s Never Normal Records), an album filled with lush melodies that unravel over breakneck percussion and constantly changing vocal samples. Barely out of W3RK DAT’s honeymoon period, Earl returns with one of most haunting tracks in footwork, “Open Up.”
“Open Up,” is stitched together with an unrelenting sub-beat and a ghostly vocal sample that could find a home in a Julianna Barwick deep cut. Digital hi-hats cut through the mix alongside a stabbing synth pattern, while a delayed “Open that circle up” vocal chop rings out like an ancient mantra. Footwork as a meditation, a deep contemplation, a spiritual belief. “Open Up.”
WHERE: Right here.
WHEN: Right now.
HOW: That’s the question, isn’t it?
