Grand Analog have blended hip-hop with its life-bestowing genre of reggae for a solid decade, yet the Toronto collective’s sound now finds itself at its most poignant on their new EP. Titled Love Is A Battlefield, the follow-up to 2014’s Modern Thunder supplies a righteous blend of blaring horns, electronic-tinged dub plucks, and looping synthesizers weaved through genre-bending percussion whose clattering, baseline pace is embellished upon with snare and hi-hat flairs. Emcee Odario Williams’ ability to walk the line atop his group’s production with equal amounts of impassioned singing and outright spitting supplies a wealth of versatility that is just as rewarding verse-to-verse as it is on major tonal shifts from one track to the next, vocally tying together an EP so astutely grounded in the past and present.
Without further ado, stream Love Is A Battlefield below and cop the record when it drops October 7 via The Confidence Emperors. It’s available for a free download through SoundCloud for this week only, so get on that.
