It’s an undeniable reality that the information pathway of the WWW is deluged with remixes. We spend countless hours sitting and staring at the screen, waiting for waveforms to upload; in the case of remixes, there’s anticipation as to whether the r-word will push the track toward redundancy or, conversely, breathe new life into the original work. Gainesville-based Hundred Waters’ Down from the Rafters EP consists of remixes (per Huxley, The Field, and Tim Hecker) of the eponymous track, taken from The Moon Rang Like A Bell full-length. It’s no surprise that Hecker’s remix is a testament to the innovative spin on reinterpretation, showing that the gravitas of a remix can be as critical as the original track itself (and perhaps more so).
Hecker’s version lingers and swells in the lull of eyes-closed-with-headphones zone, and intricately so. The groundwork laid down by Hundred Waters is developed in magnitude and complexity by Hecker’s signature handiwork. We are moved by a composed and granular regality (ah, how I love everything granular), treading dynamically across a sonic spectrum of light and speed. Repetition is trance-like, imparting a sense of floating within the space of deserted Icelandic terrain, with both weightlessness and timelessness. The layers of Hundred Waters fit well into the density of Hecker’s buildup, without any sense of domination on behalf of either.
The Down from the Rafters EP is out November 6 via OWLSA Records, in tandem with Hundred Waters’ 20-date European tour and selected dates with Interpol in North America.
