Like a cross between Joni Mitchell and Lou Reed, Kristian North is coming attcha this Valentine’s Day with arty video-vibes directed by Georgia Graham for the single “Wordplay.” With the quality of hi-fi studio vocals, sandy-phasered strums, steady-rusty taps of rhythm, and a sax solo that’s as dusted as your favorite childhood cassette tape, “Worldplay” has the ability to tickle the literary fancy of anyone willing to sit back and nod along. The video brings that same tongue-and-cheek humor North provides in the vocalization of these lyrics: stark, curious, a bit chewed up, velvety red, candelabra bath, lava(?), bubbles and birds, spilled ink. We’ll get it right one day, you know? We all will! Shit, will we?
“Wordplay” is off the upcoming Kristian North release, The Last Rock N Roll Record, which is self-described as “The record is a wordy, songwriter affair that flirts with early digital sounds, emotive soft rock and 80s excess. Songs about authenticity, love, the creative process and the end times, inspired by nu jazz, detective novels, and Z.A.Z comedies.”
The Last Rock N Roll Record drops March 9 on digital and vinyl formats, sold by North, solo-style. In the meantime, pre-order that sucker, snoop the second single video for “Wordplay” below, and play the first single, “The Striking Chord” by clicking here. Oh, and Happy Valentine’s Day, bb:
