The use of sound in art is a history waiting to be written. When someone eventually assumes the mantle and quill, a significant chapter better be devoted to Canadian gothic-erotic, electro-artist Alex Mackenzie, who has been creating unique experimental pop and trailblazing art and activism as Petra Glynt for the past seven years.
For her sonically hypnotic, Lynchian “New Growth” video, the medium is the message, and the message is a loud-and-clear, angry, emotional-but-wonderfully-hopeful response to the #metoo movement and the inspirational rallying thereafter of non-men. It is feminist performance art at its finest, and we are very proud to air the premiere of the video for “New Growth” today. MacKenzie says of the video:
The “New Growth” video carries these feelings of anger and empowerment. I chose to create my own version of a scene from David Lynch’s “Wild at Heart.” The love, passion, hope, and strength the couple share in this particular clip is visceral. Replacing the hetero relationship with my best friend and I was a conscious choice. I want to see more images of empowered womxn, non-binary, and trans folx in lead roles. I want to see queerness up front and center. The couple may not know where they’re going, but together they are full of hope and passion; an emotional combination I like to cling to.
“New Growth” is taken from the superb My Flag Is A Burning Rag Of Love album, out now on Pleasence Records. Two Canadian dates are listed below if you find yourself north of the 49th parallel tonight and tomorrow. If so or if not, find yourself in the Paz Ramirez-directed video for “New Growth” below.
