When you get to know a label really well, you start to expect a certain sound with each release. But is that really fair to the label, when I want to keep hearing new music, albeit tapes that sound similar to ones I’ve already heard? Constellation Tatsu has such a well defined aesthetic that, upon first listen to Suryummy’s “Couch Creekin,” I couldn’t help but think, hmm, is this when Tatsu jumps the shark?. To be fair, the initially goofy hip-hop/glitch percussion was a WTF moment for me; however, drive past that opening and you’ll hear an inspired take on Tatsu’s unique brand of chill-out ambient/new age. Suryummy, the moniker of SF based Emmett Feldman, is about to drop a new tape, Prismatic Escalator, as part of Constellation Tatsu’s Summer Batch and, if “Couch Creekin” is any indication, it will be a glorious affair. The summer batch drops July 11, so keep a watch out for those. As always, Steven at Tatsu curates a diverse set of sounds for us, and the new batch is going to be just as deep and trippy.
