As the world’s dopest athletes descend on Rio de Janeiro next month, some of Rio’s best underground musicians are getting the fxck away from that heat and striking north for the rest of the winter/summer. If you’re in New York or DC in August, track down Ava Rocha, who has the most powerful set of pipes you’re likely to hear today. This is the video for her most recent single, “Lyngua Loka”, filmed during Carnival 2016, at which Ava and her crew had a great time, speeding up samba lines and infecting them with increasingly virulent digital background tweaker noise and just filming every single tongue they could find. CRAZY tongues in Brazil.
Ava Rocha is bringing her own tongue and the attached vocal cords Stateside for a string of gigs that suspiciously begin on the same day as the Olympic Games. She’s joined by guitarist Marcos Campello, who plays in totally worth your time Rio bands Negro Leo and Chinese Cookie Poets and dabbles in a little solo freakout noise on his own time. Check the duo of Ava and Marcos here, or better yet, check in with them at one of the dates and places below. You might wanna pencil in the one at Elvis Guesthouse in NYC, which includes an additional solo set by Campello and an improv jam with many-armed drum monster Kid Millions filling in behind the kit.
