PHI-PHENOMENA, an annual festival whose goal was to have 10 bands perform within one hour, went down in New York (1996, 1998), Boston (1997), Minneapolis (1999), Los Angeles (2000), and Miami (2001). In September 2001, PHI-PHENOMENA ON WHEELS took the show on the road, as touring members traveled the country together in an RV and met up with local acts along the way. On September 15, the tour stopped by the Flywheel Arts Collective in East Hampton, MA, where Foot (Thurston Moore, Jim Dunbar, and Don Fleming) performed inside a Volvo using the car’s engine, horn, and radio as instruments. Hanging in the car with them were J Mascis and Tom Verlaine, as well as Jim O’Rourke, who played a solo on the car’s roof with a balance ball.
