Once as an undergraduate, I hazedly hypothesized to an equally baked roommate that modern street skateboarding, had it first risen to popularity in New York rather than California, might have ended up a core element of hip-hop culture. This was, of course, inanely conjectural stoner babble (like most shit that flew out of my mouth from 2003 to 2007), but the point, if there ever was one, remains: skateboarding and rapping are both at their core fun, rebellious, youth-oriented activities that have driven subcultures from the coastal underground to the international mainstream over the past four decades. (For perhaps the illest subcultural cross-section ever, listen to the mysterious Wu-Tang Clan - Mystagogue mixtapes, which were supposedly given out only at select skate shops to promote the Wu skate team.)
Maybe that’s why the Hail Mary Mallon duo of Aesop Rock and Rob Sonic chose to use pre-dawn street-skating footage for their newest music video … probably not, I don’t know. Also not sure why Hail Mary Mallon haven’t appeared on our site at all until now, despite having destroyed 2011 with Are You Gonna Eat That? and 2014 with Bestiary, whilst shooting all manner of weird, wild and wacky videos along the way. Catch up.
