John Mayer, like Coldplay, stands as one of many embellishments on a lifetime of listening. I was introduced to his music in high school, at the height of his early 00’s “Daughters” era fame, and even though I was also jamming obscure tunes I now like to highlight as my music press bona fides, I was a Mayer fan. I saw him live twice, once on Valentine’s Day with a friend, seated next to a group of high schoolers (I was in college at the time). I even did a presentation for AP English about John Mayer as a good writer (**smacking my head emoji**). This is pretty damn embarrassing. In both hindsight and in the present, as evidenced by the cover art of his new album, The Search for Everything, John Mayer is the ultimate Nice Guy, and his music is all about being a piece of shit to everyone you claim to care about, and not being self-aware enough to realize it.
Nevertheless, his new song, “Still Feel Like Your Man,” is not too bad. For the past few years I’ve ensconced myself in the soft rock of Steely Dan and Hall & Oates, and this new one is a smooth jam through and through. If anyone let my dumb ass DJ again, I’d drop this tune right at the peak of the party.
Tell your friends you’re listening to Narkopop, but you and I will know you’re really listening to “Still Feel Like Your Man” ;)
