Synergie Split Single Series (SSSS) is part online archive, part fantasy record DIY label for the modern era. Based around the idea of 7-inch singles, each of SSSS’s releases consist of two tracks — Side A by guest musicians and Side B by avant-pop duo Synergie. Together, they present sonic explorations on the present geo-political situation.
SSSS02 — the label’s latest release — sees harpist Rhodri Davies and digital manipulator Dane Law join forces on a subtle, yet brilliant track titled “Aur.” Davies’s harp is present, but Dane Law’s subsequent iterative electronic improvisations rid it of its celestial quality. The harp plucks are granular, brief, digitally shortened, but all the more interesting. It’s as if the original recording was shattered into a million tiny shards and then haphazardly reassembled. The result, “Aur,” is random, glacial, but also utterly beautiful. In yet-again-icy London, I could listen to this for days.
