DJ? Acucrack Killing Mobius

[Crack Nation; 2005]

Rating: 4.5/5

Styles: industrial drum and bass, electronica
Others: Venetian Snares, Photek, DJ Wally, Breakbeat Era

Since Photek hasn't released a DnB record since 1998, Chicago's DJ? Acucrack — with a question mark on account of their live synths, samplers, vocals, and the fact that they just play their own music — is in the upper echelon of junglist names producing at the moment. Continuing to evolve as such, the fourth LP from Jason Novak and Jamie Duffy (both formerly of the industrial band Acumen Nation) is so good, my brain had a Brain Fart!!! It's the wacky new concept show by Canada's own Much Music!!! Remember how much you mildly enjoyed VH1's Pop-Up Video? Now enjoy a bad Canadian rip-off version where all the videos suck mainstream balls, all the facts are researched from grocery store cashiers and/or tabloids, and every joke is boring and obvious even to the dumbest Rhesus monkey (for example, "do I look fat in these pants" ...har). Held in this state of mind-meltdown for the bulk of Much's year-end programming, I'm not even sure what genre "Send More Paramedics" is supposed to be now, but fuck if it isn't captivating anyway, especially in the massively distorted glitch-tar that follows the vocal play. Nor can I begin to imagine what set I'd hear "Thalidomide" mixed in, with its that-close-to-a-Flaming-Lips'-"Fight Test"-sample synth. But it is obvious, even in passing, to see why Acucrack landed the prestigious opening slot for KMFDM on their 2004 North American tour, who return the favor here with Kill Mutha Fucking Depeche Mode's Sascha remixing "So To Speak," the lead downtempo single from Mako Vs. Geist. While downtempo legends Delerium moonlight in Front Line Assembly, the blurred line between digital and industrial continues to produce amazing music, as Killing Mobius is deservedly one of the best drum and bass albums of 2005.
