Out of the bay area, definitely renowned more for producing quality hip-hop, punk, and psychedelia than twisted electronic acts, comes Eats Tapes’ sophomore release. Again, the San Francisco abstract techno duo of Marijke Jorritsma and Gregory Zifcak kicks out a most spastic Nintendo circuit-bending barrage as disturbingly catchy as it is utterly insane. The maniacal tendencies that teased their more rave-friendly acid house debut Sticky Buttons have been fully embraced here, pushing 8-bit synths and digital noise loops to the breaking point in the process. Forming this chaos, tunes are based around grating blips and squeals, as opposed to typical fat techno pads and leads. From a pure listening standpoint, this makes Dos Mutantes more enjoyable as an album, but I find myself missing those dominating classic 303 sounds, the ones that sink their claws into your feet and make you feel retarded for not moving. I am an old school raver at heart, though, so that might not affect you guys as much. The fact of the matter is, Mutantes is a work of tweakin’ schizophrenia and pumping 4/4 beats that will find itself comfortably in the homes of aging partiers and trendy indiots alike…unless they be fun haters. Damn yous!
