Hip-hop keeps on gaining speed in the UK, and, as it does, the quality grows with it. This is the debut release for the Brighton based hip-hop trio of programmer The Soulful Spider, deck-wrecker Kojak, and rhyme-slayer The Amber MC. For first timers, this is a tight EP heavily recalling the old school vibe of Black Sheep but with progressing contemporary technique. Their choice of samples reflects this with the first on the album from the rap culture satire CB4, and later Grand Mixer D.ST's "fresh" makes a cameo, and there is not one but two pieces from Woodstock '69, most notably "Can You Dig That," which bases the track around the dicing of Arlo Guthrie's introductory chat from his legendary performance there. About half the tracks here are instrumentals where Kojak is unleashed on a variety of these samples over Spider's memorable beats -- not that Kojak doesn't bust out on practically every track, but on those it's at his leisure. Amber MC turns in some interesting performances too, specifically "Lyrical Highgrade," where he is squeaked down to a Quasimoto/Dr. Greenthumb hybrid for their ode to that sweet smoke of enlightenment. Their album is sure to be an ass shaking party staple. UK hip-hop is here, spread the word.
