Dave Pianka and Josh Houtkin step up to the plate and deliver just what they promise. Go Commando is a New York club night in a can; all you’re missing is Marilyn Manson on acid driving a U-Haul. Kicking off with a track from K7 electronic pop-funk oddity Joakim’s second album, the mix quickly settles into more traditional electro and house, at least until Ellen Allien and Apparat’s breakbeat kicker “Do Not Break.” The transitional mix from this track into Mr. Oizo’s stock acid hip-hop number “Halfanedit” almost sounds like a subtle appropriation of Aphex Twin’s “Windowlicker.” In the context of the entire mix, there’s a good chance it was merely a case of accidental genius, but the timing coincides perfectly with the time an average fan’s first pill starts kicking in, so you just have to give the benefit of the doubt to the artists. Cuts like the Soulwax Nite Version of The Gossip’s “Standing In The Way Of Control” meet The Rapture’s “The Sound,” Kompakt’s Gui Boratto, and Four Tet's "A Joy" with enough clarity to almost hear all them Big Apple boys hanging around outside, bumming drags off the odd smoke while taking a breather. It’s one hell of a party, man. You know how stuffy it can get inside. Sometimes you need a break from the acid sounds and high-pitched synth barrage. Believe me, you will leave this shindig feeling well-tweaked. Holla!
