Following the likes of critically acclaimed Audion and labelmate Speedy J, French drummer Mr. No and Minnesotan producer Bryan Black have come to pick at the well-defined subgenre of industrial techno. And sure, their debut CD succeeds where so many before them have failed. Though based around ripping glitchy synths and serious melodies, the chugging beats are get-up danceable. This makes Klunk's tracks much more captivating than those on The Collabs 3000 debut, with Klunk being more techno than industrial. The only thing that really hurts this album is the brain-shrinkingly inane vocals these guys occasionally employ. Without vocals, "1 X 1" is a total fist-pumper, but with the line "Come and see me one by one/ Come and see me let's have some fun" droned over and over, an otherwise essential track becomes an automatic skipper. "Yak" is less of a tragedy because the instrumental is nowhere near as intriguing, but the vocal line, "Hey man, have you got any gak/ See my head's a bit wack" makes it a skip, nevertheless. However, if you can forgive the vocals, Klunk is one of the better dance records of 2006.
