So, for various reasons not limited to the souring of the term by the likes of prominent Canadian thing-flickers, traditional dubstep has seen a waning in popularity over the past few years. Presumably, at least a few of the artists who were a part of that scene have gone on to become accountants keen on dropping that… financial bottom line, but a few others, such as Dave Huismans a.k.a. 2562, have followed their musical momentum down the path that it was leading anyway — toward something a little more ambiguous in the rhythmic landscape. It’s not quite house. It’s not quite techno. It’s… god damn it, is it okay to resort to the umbrella cop-out category “electronic” in this case? The career genre hyphenators are apparently too busy working on the rock side of things these days.
Huisman’s A Made Up Sound project has seen more attention lately with the release of a few heart-pounding singles and 12-inches, but with The New Today on October 20, the Utrecht resident is marking a revival of the (somewhat more melodic) numerical. A press release describes the new album in terms that might be a verbal rendition of a Picasso, mentioning a “collage” of influences relating to post-punk, musique concrète, krautrock, “new age tapes,” and others that might not be totally obvious when you listen to the single below.
Why not live in the moment? It’s a sweet track. The album’s out on Huismans’s own When In Doubt label.
