There’s a common criticism that Americans don’t get irony, or Colonial humor or whatever. That being the case, the announcement that Sydney “artist” Alex Cameron will be releasing his debut album Jumping the Shark in America through Secretly Canadian on August 19 is a real pearler.
You see, Alex Cameron is not Alex Cameron.
Alex Cameron is the stage name and persona played by a “real” musician called Alex Cameron, who also plays in a band called Seekae.
Confusing? Yes. Ironic. Yes. Hilarious if you’re in on the joke? Hell yes. Just check out the Alex Cameron website.
As for the music. It’s actually been kicking around the antipodes since 2013. The fact that it’s being picked up by an American label three years later proves that the 80s electro-inspired songs on Jumping the Shark transcend irony and that maybe Americans do get irony after all.
