Not that we even deserve it! But the benevolent and impeccable ears at Anthology Records are preparing to gift us once more by breathing life back into a trilogy of albums by French psych-folk pioneers Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes.
If you’re unfamiliar with Ribeiro’s unique style, then immediately scrub any pre-conceptions of french chanteuses or ye-ye starlets…because her vocal approach summons demons from the turmoil that surrounded the group in Paris 1968 and infuses it with her personal experiences as a child during a Nazi occupied France.
Throw that voice in with some prime late-60s psychedelic folk, and you’ve got a unique and confoundingly brilliant combination that reigned in underground France from 1968 to 1981.
You can now supplant your collection or take the virgin trip thanks to Anthology’s re-issue of the group’s first three albums: N°2, (1970), Âme Debout (1971), and Paix (1972) on September 14, either as standalone albums or in a groovy boxed set. Just head here to pre-order, and check out preview clips via YouTube below.
As an added bonus, you can check out Circuit des Yeux’s take on the Ribeiro + Alpes track “Sœur de Race” below. Haley Fohr’s vocal gymnastics draw a line from Ribeiro’s — a fact that Ribeiro herself recognises, explaining that Fohr’s “blooming talent is at the tip of her vocal cords.” What do you say? Enticed, much?
