Antony and the Johnsons invite you to meditate at MOMA Swanlights performance

On those cold evenings when you find yourself in need of a meditation — perhaps one that centers around light, nature, and femininity — you probably wish Antony Hegarty was there to hold you close, as orchestral music plays in the background. Well, those midwinter dreams of yours are about to come true, more or less. The Museum of Modern Art has commissioned Antony and his Johnsons to perform a special concert on January 26 at Radio City Music Hall.

Titled after their most recent release on Secretly Canadian, Swanlights (TMT Review) will feature a 60-piece orchestra and include songs from all four of Antony and the Johnson’s albums. Nico Muhly, Rob Moose, and Maxim Moston will provide the symphonic arrangements, while light artist Chris Levine and lighting designer Paul Normandale will enhance the visual aspect. After all, what’s a meditation on light without the light? For darkness is the absence of light, don’tcha know?

Ahead of the Radio City Music Hall performance, a Charles Atlas and Antony Hegarty film called TURNING will see its screening premiere on November 11 at Copenhagen’s Documentary Film Festival CPH:DOX. The footage was captured in 2006 as Atlas toured with Antony and the Johnsons, exploring “themes of identity, transcendence and the revelation of essence.”

Tickets for Antony and the Johnsons: Swanlights go on sale to the public on November 12 at 10 AM. Visit Radio City Music Hall or Ticketmaster to book your one-way ticket to meditation.
