A beautiful voice creeps in from somewhere. You can’t place the source. It seems like it’s from everywhere. Everywhere at once, somehow. It makes you want to use adjectives. Heavenly. Angelic. Divine. The desire is too strong, you fold under the pressure, cracking open your thesaurus as news of a new Antony and the Johnsons live full-length (a follow up to 2012’s live album Cut the World — Antony’s last studio full-length was 2010’s Swanlights) and DVD wash over you. Celestial. Supernatural. Ambrosial. Both the album and the film are entitled Turning and they are both out November 11 via Secretly Canadian. Ethereal.
The film is a concert documentary of Antony’s tour with Charles Atlas in the fall of 2006, a tour in which Antony was joined in his performance stage by a group of 13 women toward the “revelation of a revolutionary feminine essence.” The album contains the audio of a full recording of the Turning performance, containing songs from the first three Antony and the Johnsons albums, in addition to two rare studio tracks from that period. Once you’ve exhausted yourself of all the sensible adjectives you can muster, pre-order the album here, and watch the film’s trailer below.
