There have been a few eyebrow-raising stories of big-name bands turning to fan-funding platforms for their new albums, like Public Enemy giving it a failed try via Sellaband (TMT News), or Gang of Four being a bit more successful with their album Content, which they paid for through Pledge Music. So it shouldn’t be surprising that, after years of marginal success, some major label would take a shot in the dark at the platform.
Atlantic Records, a subsidiary of Warner Music Group, is using the aforementioned Pledge Music in an attempt to get fans to lay down cash to produce an EP that will accompany the sophomore release of trip-hop artist Natty. Depending on how much you give, you’re entitled to a variety of treats for your investment. £8 gets you the EP itself, £70 lets you introduce Natty on stage; for £1,200, Natty will remix your track, and for £600 to £5,000, you can even get Natty to play your living room. Why there’s such a price range for that bit is currently unknown.
Yes, after years of suing you for your 15 Hannah Montana songs, major labels are now asking you to pay for the recording of their albums. Well played, sirs.
