It’s too bad nobody really follows up their adolescent jamming in their parents’ basement with its natural conclusion: professionally jamming in their own basement (or in any other residential room) to an extent that would clearly belie a seething hatred for sound traps and other studio frivolities!
Obviously, Bill Orcutt and Jacob Felix Heule (of Sult and numerous other percussionist ventures) are exceptions to this claim, and on October 16, they’re formally acknowledging their homespun preference with the release of Colonial Donuts, their first album together after spending three years contributing to the Bay Area live scene. The album was recorded in Orcutt’s living room, which is presumably somewhat sizable, since it had to accommodate his guitar, Heule’s drums, and and all of the furniture that vibrationally migrated against the walls as a result of all that (I’m guessing) improvisational noise. Clearly these two were and are on the same musical wavelength.
Curious about the sound of it now? Check out the track “Labor and Enchantment” below, right after I disabuse you of your doubtless curiosity surrounding the album name: an actual Bay Area donut chain. All of the tracks are of the savory hole variety.
