R. Kelly’s most ardent and hirsute fan, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, has something very special to share with his own fans on October 4 — a new full-length on Drag City! Wolfroy Goes to Town is its name, and 50 minutes of Oldham Audio is its game. This particular grouping of 10 earthy ditties features Emmett Kelly (who is essentially The Cairo Gang), Ben Boye, Van Campbell, Shahzad Ismaily, Danny Kiely, and Angel Olsen (who can write damn fine songs all on her own). The album will be available in the standard LP/CD/digital formats, though I’m still hoping for a wacky alternate option to emerge, like the “10-inch Ultraload” version of Beware or the wine stopper version of Wonder Show of the World.
Though it’s been a couple years since his last album, Beware (TMT Review), Bonnie has been dropping lower-key releases by the armfuls in the interim, including a series of 10-inches that all could have fit on 7-inches, sparking outrage among fans that are me. Though his full-length collaboration last year with The Cairo Gang may have warranted one or two of the “adult contemporary” jabs he’s had unjustly grumbled at him since roughly 2001, Oldham never turns in anything close to a tossed-off solo album, so any and all excitement for Wolfroy is hereby… authorized!
