Japanese producer and Red Bull Music Academy participant Daisuke Tanabe is finally putting out his second LP via German imprint Ki Records, titled Floating Underwater. Apparently, Red Bull makes you float underwater now. Nevertheless, Tanabe’s kept pretty busy the past few years, releasing some EPs, remixes, and an entire album with Kidkanevil under the moniker Kidsuke.
Dropping as a double 10-inch on September 15, Floating Underwater’s 15 cuts are “full of surprising twists and turns and genre-defying sounds,” continuing a style of naturalistic and glitchy electronics that could only come from Japan. No, lead track “Paper Planes” is not an homage to M.I.A; instead, the song pairs twinkling layers of chopped-up bells with icy interwoven percussion. Now that the Japanese ban on dancing may be easing up soon, Tanabe’s tunes might eventually need to lead his country’s booty-shaking Footloose revival. Until then, we’ll enjoy the artist’s fluttering, esoteric beats and imagine we’re at an all-night rave in the shadow of Mount Fuji.
