Dream-country balladeer and ribbed cotton A-shirt spokesmodel Daughn “Don, Not Dawn” Gibson has up and signed a little old deal with that nice young label down the road called Sub Pop. Fans of either Gibson’s pretty good music or Tiny Mix Tapes’ pretty great writing will recall that Gibson just released All Hell the other month on the White Denim label. So why the sudden change? Rising fame? More money? Wider distribution? Naw, I think it’s probably just that white denim is a bad look for a cowboy.
Gibson’s Sub Pop debut is slated for some time next year. However, to consummate the deal, Gibson did go out of his way (or maybe he didn’t; what the hell do I know?) to sample his new labelmates in Shabazz Palaces and Tiny Vipers on a new track called “Reach into the Fire,” which is streaming below. He also expanded his currently-in-motion US tour, because “touring until it’s no fun anymore” is in his contract now.
