Hey, great economic news for the cash-strapped state of California! San Francisco-based black metal-y/shoegaze-y/best-new-music-y band Deafheaven have recently signed to ANTI- Records, easily the most wealthy and influential record label in the Western hemisphere. And not only that, but the band has announced that they will be releasing a brand new album — the follow-up to that album of theirs Sunbather that some people liked alright back in 2013 — on October 2. Hot dog! Finally, a revenue source that’s actually dependable so California can fix all those THINGS about California that no one likes very much (thanks for NOTHING, all you 90 pro sports teams)!
According to the press release, the album was recorded “live to tape at 25th Street Recording in Oakland, CA and Atomic Garden Recording in East Palo Alto, CA in April 2015,” which of course boosted the local economies of those two cities by some 7,000%. It was also “produced, engineered, mixed, and mastered by Jack Shirley who has worked with the band on their previous releases,” so you know it’s going to sound at least as good and be AT LEAST as popular as all previous Deafheaven releases put together. You can pre-order the album on vinyl and CD right over here, and you can peep the nice, sunny, beach-y, surf-y album trailer down below before the tracklisting.
Commenting on the album’s seemingly non-Golden State-themed title, singer guy George Clarke says that he “came up with the idea of ‘New Bermuda’ to describe a new destination in life, a nebulous point of arrival, and an unknown future where things get swallowed up and dragged into darkness.” Okay, so no worries! Sounds like like this album will DEFINITELY give The Beach Boys’ Surf’s Up a run for its money as the most iconic and lucrative California album ever.
