Re-imagining the past through music is big business these days. And if you’re going to undertake such an endeavor non-ironically, it takes a lot of hard work and years upon years of serious academic study in the dog-eat-dog fields of Jean Jacket Design, Guitar Sensitivity Training, Neon Color Theory, Saxophone Psychology, Pastel Color Theory, Airbrush Appreciation, most importantly, Being By the Bay. Then, when you finally graduate, you can’t stop. You’ve got to tough it out and keep pursuing an intimate relationship with it out there in the real world (where it counts) at all costs. And — if you’ll allow me to muddle things up a little with a second metaphor — you can’t just flirt with this stuff, either. You’ve got to learn how to court it, woo it, wine-n-dine it, and fuck it with such a fantastic combination of steaminess and gentleness that it never leaves you. You marry it, grow old with it, and are mourned by it when you die peacefully enrobed in neon yellow velour and purple denim by the Bay as an old man.
But… the way Dan Bejar figures it, he’s so far ahead of the rest of his classmates that he’s got some time to kill while everyone catches back up. So while everyone else is studying up on 1980s sleeze, breeze, lounge, and lust, and trying hard as hell to love those things without using cocaine first, he’ll be joyriding around the US and Canada, taking a few victory laps for last year’s smooth-as-some-smooth-balls Kaputt (TMT Review). And, you know, possibly enjoying some well-deserved cocaine.
