Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley is teaming up with Chicago’s Disappears to make beeeeeeautiful music together.
Disappears have been lighting up the CHI-TOWN (I’m sorry I said that) scene since 2008, when former 90 Day Men/The Ponys alumnus Brian Case teamed up with Graeme Gibson, Jonathan Van Herik, and Damon Carruesco to create the kind of awesome Krauty garage rock that helped the young band rope in a slot at Pitchfork Festival only a year after the group’s inception. After Gibson departed the band, the group was left with a big drum kit-sized hole… which is when Steve Shelley stepped in.
Meanwhile, the newly reconstituted Disappears churned out 2011’s Guider. Shelley joined in on drums, and now they’re back in the studio, this time with Shelley as producer, too. The forthcoming LP will be released through Kranky in 2012, as will an alluringly-described collaborative LP with Shelley, Disappears, and White/Light. (This rock ‘n’ roll trinity currently has a 7-inch kicking around stores, too.)
If you can’t handle waiting for the year our Mayan Alien Overlords will wreak vengeance on the planet, you can take a listen to the new incarnation of Disappears by picking up the five-song tour CD-R Live from Echo Canyon through Plustapes.
