Adam Feingold, the Montreal-born producer you may remember from 2014’s genre-bending EP Apron, has announced Nuff Zang, his first full-length album, to be released by 1080p. Feingold has described his new album as a “record for the whole self,” where he sets aside the fervent experimentation of his previous work, looking for new textural and emotional registers in the combination of energetic dance music and zoned-out electronic pieces. Indeed, the eight tracks comprising Nuff Zang suggest a more holistic approach to the genre-crossing manners some critics refer to as “power ambient”; the result is an album for you to dance your way to satori.
Yet, Nuff Zang does not bring an entirely new stylistic veneer to Feingold’s work: the mixes he put out via Temple Records already hinted at a dance floor-ready music that didn’t scoff at trance detours. The album’s novelty comes in how balanced and mutually sustaining these two strands appear. Feingold achieves this objective at times, putting classic house inflections (“Don’t Fuck with My Chi”) next to introspective tracks (“Night of Scorpio,” “Zang”), but more often than not, seamlessly pulling out meditative segments in the middle of jaunty techno beats (“Palo Santo,” “Back to Earth,” “Reflex”).
Nuff Zang is out on April 21, via 1080p.
