An optimism overrides as you reach into your pocket for a mythical wad of cash, but what are the contents of your hand as you pull back out? Lint and a few paper clips, adequately welded to your palm by a questionable clear adhesive. Hopes of a fantastic summer adventure out of state or out of country immediately come crashing down with the realization that, unlike sea turtles, who are uniquely equipped to indulge their migrational impulses without financial hindrance, you’re fucking broke, so the best you can do is a weekend trip to the Nipple Convention held in the basement of Uncle Mike’s Areolaplasty downtown. If only hygienic vagabonds had a unique alternative…
Probably not his sole intent, sound artist Francisco López has been taking us around the world for some 400+ releases now. His newest one, titled with traditional indistinctness, is Untitled #300, set for release April 13 in an edition of 400 (100 green & blue LPs and 300 “crystal clear” LPs), courtesy of TAIGA. They have the whole, relatively short story here, but the noteworthy part is that the release was recorded along the Moroccan-Algerian border with hydrophone and contact mics capturing the seagulls and sea creatures with whom some of us have longed to physically frolic. This may be the next best thing.
Here’s the first part of an earlier work, as López and “field recordings” gradually approach synonym status:
