♩ Lookin’ in the mirror not a jacker in sight… today was a good day. ♩
No, wait — that’s the I:Cube who might not be able to live down his decidedly non-gangster role as a sudden babysitter in the 2005 epic Are We There Yet?. I:Cube — the Paris, France-based downtempo dance producer — has subtly been making music for more than 20 years, and his music has had a notable influence on the French (and European generally) house and techno scenes. In fact, hardly a year has gone by since the mid-90s where I:Cube hasn’t released some sort of single or remix or album in order to placate those who have been inebriated by his typically-calm-yet-totally-danceable sound — thanks in no small part to Gilbert Cohen’s Versatile Records, which has sponsored almost all of I:Cube’s formal releases throughout his career.
And lo and behold, the sponsorship continues: May 4 sees the release of Double Pack, a new double EP from I:Cube…AND a new 7” entitled XXX (Abels edit) /Etire en Avant. The latter record will come under Chaix’s Oeil Cube moniker, and the track “Etire en Avant” was originally recorded in 1996 from the amateur confines of Chaix’s bedroom at his parents’ house. Double Pack’s alleged claim to fame, outside of the tunes therein, is its upcoming status as Versatile’s 120th release. Round numbers are fun.
