Back in 2011 — a time some might refer to as the beginning of the end of the Golden Age of MP3 blogs — I was browsing one of my favorites, the enigmatic Keytars & Violins (still going strong, btw!), as I did almost daily. On one such surfing occasion, I stumbled upon a track from the then recently released debut from Zodiac Free Arts Club — a.k.a. Greek producer and DJ Argyris Theofilis. The blog specialized in house, techno, and all forms of deep electronics, and the track was a deep tribute to the cosmic, synth driven psychedelic sounds of late 1960s Berlin.
Now, seven years later, Argy has resurrected the Zodiac Free Arts Club moniker for his sophomore effort, Structures + Codes, which drops May 25 via John Talabot’s Hivern Discs sub-label HVNX. The whole record was inspired by painter Constantin Xenakis, with each track meant to correspond “to a painting by Xenakis, translating its intricate shapes and patterns into spirit-lifting compositions filled with elliptic arpeggios, repetitive drum machines, and esoteric melodies in proper kosmische manner.” In other words, this is some top shelf, Grade A zoning material.
One of the deepest cuts, premiering today on TMT, is “Constat D’accident.” The new track is a heady, narcotic brew of driving synths, percussion, and what I like to imagine are multi-colored laser lights streaming from my laptop as I listen in the dark, turning my room into a psychedelic party for one.
