Gruff Rhys makes crazy industrial album, South American documentary

Musicians: they can’t get enough of making documentaries about South America! (See Diplo’s favela doc.) This time, the man with the video camera is Super Furry Animals/Neon Neon’s Gruff Rhys, whose Separado! “takes us on a pan continental road trip in search of Rhys’ long lost Patagonian uncle, the poncho wearing guitarist Rene Griffiths,” according to a press release. Ponchos? I’m sold.

The film has been five years in the making, and in it Rhys and co-director Dylan Goch touch on topics ranging from family to Welsh immigration. The US premiere happens on June 24 and 26 in Los Angeles. Brits can also expect screenings this summer, and our Mexican friends not only get a July 3 premiere, but also a live performance from Rhys.

In other Rhys/South America-related news, fans will soon have a very limited chance to cop the man’s recent collabo with Brazilian industrial guru Tony Da Gatorra, The Terror of Cosmic Loneliness, a digital release via OVNI/Turnstile Records, coming out July 26. In fact, Separado! features footage of the recording process. Not sure about the poncho status on this album, but any recording where the artists have a sort of laser eye thing going on has got to be worth a listen.
