Okay, let’s get this out of the way. The Phil Collins we’re talking about is a Berlin-based artist, not the “do-do, do-do, do-do, do-do, dun-dun-dun!” drum fill guy. Not that it’d be a huge deal if the dude did team up with the man behind the runaway hit Disney musical Tarzan… I mean, we’re talking about the guy who has eaten fucking Sir Paul McCartney’s adult-artist-phase cheesy ham hoagies and managed to shit out something interesting in the past, so Rhys clearly has a knack for navigating the rocky psychological terrain of the elder statesmen.
But either way. Doesn’t matter. This Phil Collins is not that Phil Collins. This Phil Collins is a Turner Prize nominee for his short film, The Meaning of Style, which basically follows a gang of anti-fascist Malaysian skinheads for a while. Ah, classic Phil Collins. The film will be shown at The Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo starting September 23 through January 9 of next year, and Rhys handled the soundtrack song, which is entitled Y Baban Bach. In addition to soundtracking the movie, the song is set to be released as a very limited-edition (only 300 copies, people) 7-inch single, which will be available exclusively at Gruff’s forthcoming UK tourdates. But more importantly, Gruff Rhys gets to go around town claiming that he just soundtracked A Phil Collins movie. And that sounds like a fun sentence to throw out there.
