It goes without saying that there are millions of amazing guitar players throughout this great wide world, but few are as blessed with the ability to deliver both grief and hope using tender acoustics (and the occasional brimming banjo) as Glenn Jones. For years now, Jones has been a man hell-bent on never playing it safe and always looking for inspiration in the most unexpected places. In a live setting, this curious searching comes out as pure joy personified.
And speaking of hell-bent, in honor of his three releases this year — including vinyl reissues of his first two LPs (This Is The Wind That Blows It Out and Against Which The Sea Continually Beats) and a live album Waterworks with collaborator Matthew Azevedo — the git-master has announced a clutch of east coast dates beginning TONIGHT (October 26) in Exeter, NH.
Although often associated with the “American Primitive” fingerpicking techniques pioneered by the likes of Robbie Basho and, especially, John Fahey in the late 1950s, Jones has a timeless touch and style all his own. When you are a one-man operation, you can afford to be unconventional, and Jones is just that. His selection of bonkers tunings alone set him apart from 99.999999% of players, but when you add songs that can evoke longing one minute, vibrant life the next, sans voice, you know you are witnessing a special talent.
Gird your expectations by sampling some of his work down below, and expect an “anything goes” approach at the shows listed below and concede your trust in the care-worn hands of the maestro.
