I don’t know about you, but when I think of the website Tiny Mix Tapes, I think first and foremost of all its legendary coverage of the band Horse Feathers — the reputation is something of a blessing and a curse, really. But there’s really no sense in fighting it. Ours is simply the voice of shamble-y, Appalachian-style indie-folk-rock, what can I say? But also, when I think of the implacable independent record label Kill Rock Stars, I of course think of what theyare best known for; which is, duh, hilarious albums of Pacific Northwest stand-up comedy.
So how and under what exact circumstances do these two illimitable facts coincide? So glad you asked!
I think it happens when the Portland band Horse Feathers releases a new album on Kill Rock Stars titled So It Is With Us on October 21… and when that album is also just freakin’ HILARIOUS to listen to. So I guess the only question that can rightly be asked is, “well, is this album hilarious to listen to?” I assume so! But let’s just double-check that by asking bandleader Justin Ringle to describe the new album for us.
I wanted to stop. I did all the touring for my fourth record and ended disillusioned and defeated. I didn’t touch my guitar for months. After an arduous period of self-doubt and discovery, I finally arrived at the enlightened idea that maybe it should just be a little more fun. I stopped editing myself as much. The joy of playing live became its own reward, and I dared myself to allow that joy to shape the songwriting. In the end, I was able to let it go, and I don’t own it anymore. Which also feels like joy. That’s the way it was, and so it is with us.
HAHAHAHAHAHA.
