Oh, Jesus.
No, literally, Jesus: quit stroking your venerated beard for a second, and use your wizard powers to establish a permanent forcefield around Kode9 and The Spaceape! A reasonable God might be able to take proclamations of His nonexistence in stride, but can we say the same for any variation of the Devil? Perhaps he’ll be dissuaded from fiery retribution once he hears the entirety of the duo’s new EP The Killing Season, out on Hyperdub in all relevant formats October 27. At the very least, the malevolent beast will identify with the emotionally-deep-to-the-point-of-darkness impression that the two have given off since at least 2011’s Black Sun. But what else can you expect? Hmm…
According to Spaceape a.k.a Stephen Gordon himself, the lyrics came first, which explains the relatively barren but fitting rhythms found on three of the five tracks: “We wanted to give room, create space for the vocals, and this was also because we wanted to finish the project quite quickly!” The haste isn’t obvious, and you may have already heard “Chasing a Beast” via Hyperdub 10.1, so here’s the awesome video for the Satan-denial referenced earlier:
