It’s hard to get upset at commercials. They are a necessary and inevitable nuisance when you’re watching regular TV, so airing pet peeves about ads is beyond pointless. But I’m going to air one anyway. There is a growing practice for companies to use mega-lite, over-polished cover versions to hock their wares. The “songs” are practically crawling out of the television and clawing at your earbuds and heartstrings until you weep and submit. My partner and I call it “pampering,” because the technique seems to be used EXTENSIVELY when a diaper commercial needs some scoring.
If I feel like less than a fully-formed human every time I see a new-born human being swaddled via these sub-Muzak, simpering soundtrack versions of “Leaving on a Jetplane” or “Linger,” then it only makes me want the opposite even more. Luckily, there is respite nearby. Pain is an incredible elixir, and hurt and frustration is an unavoidable, motivating part of human existence. No one does emotional, cathartic release like Lana Del Rabies. And definitely no one does it in a live setting like LDR does!
Lana Del Rabies — a.k.a. Sam An — works wonders on recordings, but live, well that’s a whole other amazing matter. The FIRST US tour by Lana Del Rabies is a small one but it will be mind-expanding and memorable. The dates below are supporting 3Teeth and Author and Punisher but, really, ANYONE coming on after LDR’s displays of performance art-grind doesn’t really stand a chance. And when the assault begins, the pampering subsides.
