Dance music legend Larry Levan’s name is synonymous with his Paradise Garage DJ nights and his contributions to early garage and house music. Now the man is getting a double-CD comp of some of his pioneering work as a producer and remixer via the forthcoming Genius of Time. Featuring sleevenotes by DJ and writer Chris Menist, this thing will shimmy its way into stores (and our hearts, ahhhh) on March 25 via Universal.
You’ll get Levan’s reworkings of Grace Jones’s “Pull Up to the Bumper,” his version of Smokey Robinson’s “And I Don’t Love You,” and bootyshaking takes on songs from Gwen Guthrie, Man Friday, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and much more. Put this thing on, and for a couple blissful hours, you can travel back in time to dirty, dangerous, glamorous NYC in the 70s and 80s.
