Light in the Attic announces new vinyl and digital singles series, shares Mac DeMarco's take on Haruomi Hosono's "Honey Moon"

Light in the Attic has been deep in the reissue game for some time, with stellar ambient/new age comp I Am The Center and its companion collection, The Microcosm, standing out among many, many others. Now, hot on the heels of releasing remastered vinyl editions of some of prolific Japanese composer Haruomi Hosono’s best works, LITA has a new single to coincide with their reissue campaign and continue celebrating Hosono’s legacy.

Hosono’s track “Honey Moon” has been faithfully covered by none other than Mac DeMarco, and he capably takes on the original’s Japanese lyrics to offer an effortlessly chill and laid-back interpretation. (I can only imagine “chill” and “laid back” will be etched onto Mac’s gravestone, much to his chagrin, and he’ll try to shake that “Jimmy Buffet for hipsters” vibe with an aggressive hardcore record in the not too distant future.)

Speaking of the not too distant future, the label of course intends to continue this covers series beyond DeMarco’s contribution. In their own words, “upcoming highlights from the covers series include acclaimed singer-songwriter Julie Byrne covering Nico, and Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker making his own unique selection from the Light In The Attic archives.” Upcoming highlights, indeed! Stay tuned!

For now, though, “Honey Moon” is available for pre-order from Light in the Attic’s shop, or for streaming, which you’ll find below. Savor and enjoy those last bits of summer, and let Mac’s mellow take on Hosono’s tune flow from your speakers ad infinitum.
