Shaking an obsession is exceedingly difficult. The intoxicating feelings one produces strengthen and empower us at first, and we hold on and pray for those positives to return when the flip-side starts playing and the compulsion begins to consume all other aspects of life. It is addiction. It is sickness. It is fear. But dammit, let’s see you try watching “Regular People Try Stabbing an Olympic Fencer” once only!
Of course, the easiest way of ridding oneself of an obsessive addiction is…to hook up with another one and wait for it to crowd out the first one. For us, it’s all been about getting our Lina Tullgren fix lately. The New England-raised songwriter dazzled with her Wishlist EP last year and is set to release her debut full length Won next month through the esteemed Captured Tracks label.
Brooklyn Vegan recently hosted the latest single, “Fitchburg State” and Won’s opening track “Asktell” recently appeared on Tullgren’s Bandcamp. Additionally, she recently did a live session video for the album track “Red Dawn” for AdHoc. And all three tunes are listenable down below. So THERE: you already have three new obsessions to work with! Why not finish the job and pre-order the complete omnibus?
Won will be released on compact disc/vinyl (limited to 500 clear vinyl copies)/cassette (first pressing limited to 200), and digital September 22. Be warned, these (captured) tracks are all very good and very much what you would expect from Tullgren: all kinds of sepia-soaked sadness and compelling vocals in left-of-center, yearning, hook-laden songs. And obviously, tracks 3 and 4 — “Face Off” and “Red Dawn” — are tributes to the Academy Award for Best Picture of 1997 and 1984 respectively! (Right???)
