When you type “ambient” into a YouTube search bar, you get photos of space. You get sounds of waves crashing. You get “meditation mixes.” But what defines an ambient sound in a city full of tension and volatility? In a city like London? In a place like a rave?
Loom — a founding member of popular club night Acid Fantasy in Londontown — sets out to find these environmental sounds from deep in England’s big apple on his newest track, “Saturday Job at Laser Quest,” which we are proud to premiere for you today. The song finds the still-young rave veteran relying heavily on the city’s rich encyclopedia of influences; jungle and grime perforate the many rhythms that dance together at an ecstatic 136 BPM, but that doesn’t stop the producer from taking his fair bite of introspection with a quiet moment colored with bird chirps and an extended vocoder moan.
Coming fresh off his upcoming London Ambient EP — out November 24 on Mr. Mitch’s eminent Gobstopper label — the cut is actually several quarts of 100-proof “rave” with maybe just a shot of ambience. The whole EP (pre-order-able here) promises many contradictions and quips at its own name, but its palette is still undoubtedly memorable…undoubtedly grimey…and undoubtedly LONDON.
