Mazzy Star! Remember them? They were one of those things from the 90s that was cool then and is still cool now. Sorry, Urkel. Sorry, fannypacks, slap bracelets, babydoll dresses, depressed teenage me, and Blossom hats. Mazzy Star is still pretty, still haunting, still not made out of crushed velvet. And check it: they’re still going!!! That’s right, this shimmering spawn of The Rain Parade and Opal have returned to the studio and are releasing their first new jams under the Mazzy Star name in 15 (too long) years. But enough with the 90s nostalgia. Hope Sandoval and David Roback transcend that nonsense, and always have. So let’s talk about the future. As in 10 days from now future: Oct 31, to be specific.
For, ye ghoulies and goblins, that’s when the latest Mazzy Star joints, “Common Burn” and B-side “Lay Myself Down,” become available for ye olde digital downloading. Then on November 8, you’ll be able to battle crazed fans around the world in hopes of possessing that holy grail of any reunited dreampop band’s output: limited edition 7-inch colored vinyl. Rhymes of an Hour Records are doing the vinyling and the coloring for that one. But the future holds even more! The web is abuzz with hints that these new jams are paving the way for a 2012 full-length. Surely this must be what those Mayans were all freaking out about. Mayans: prognosticators, occasional human sacrificers, and avid record collectors. What other secrets did these ancient wisepeople hold?
