You know that scene in Terminator 2: Judgment Day when Arnold asks a teenage John Connor why people cry, and John gives a perfectly legitimate answer relating to pain unrelated to physical injury? The machine sent back in time acts like he finally gets it when he’s on the verge of lowering himself into some liquid hot magma (sorry if I just ruined the ending). But let’s be honest: he’s a fucking robot, and it would really take an album from the likes of Erin Birgy’s Mega Bog project before “he” REALLY comprehends why a person might not be the picture of sunshine that Sarah Connor invariably is.
Mega Bog’s most recent album Happy Together almost certainly precedes a new one set for release in the very near future, and that amorphous new one will presumably expand on what we’ve leaned thus far about the Bogian tradition: Birgy experiences, and Birgy’s gonna write/sing about it. Trauma or no trauma. Satisfaction or solemnity. Psychology textbooks can only go so far (without saxophone moments).
For the time being, though, Mega Bog is joining the Athens-borne band Mothers on a tour that’s already underway for the latter. Mothers recently released their second album on the Anti- label, and lead singer Kristine Leschper apparently shares Birgy’s affinity for sharing without obvious inhibition. The respective deliveries of the two bands may be quite different overall, but we get the moral of the story: it’s totally okay to “WOO!” randomly in the crowd…or to shed a human tear or two, too.
