Buzz Osborne: good a candidate as any for 13th man on the moon

It’s kinda weird to say that The Melvins “are back,” because let’s face it: Buzz Osborne’s distinctive and divinely inspirational visage NEVER REALLY LEAVES our conscious attention (even when we’re asleep).

Nonetheless, okay, fine: The Melvins “are back” — this time with a new double-album (somehow, this is the 34-year-old band’s first one of those) entitled A Walk With Love and Death. It’ll be volitionally vomited-up into the world on July 7 via those expert puke-makers at Ipecac Recordings, and, like any good double-album should, it “finds the trio of Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover and Steve McDonald showcasing two distinct sides to the band’s music.”

The first disc, Death, serves as “a proper Melvins’ release,” while the second Love disc actually comprises the band’s score a “the Jesse Nieminen-directed, self-produced short” — which is also titled A Walk With Love and Death. “[It’s] one giant, dark, moody, psychotic head trip,” Crover assures us. “Not for the faint of heart. You’ll sleep with the lights on after listening.” (Careful not to confuse it with A Walk in the Clouds.)

The album(s) — which were also self-produced (along w/ with engineer Toshi Kosai) and feature guest spots by Joey Santiago (Pixies), Teri Gender Bender (Le Butcherettes and Crystal Fairy), and Anna Waronker (That Dog) — were described by Captain Osborne as “a huge undertaking.” He then went on to philosophize that “all three things: the album, the soundtrack, and the film are benchmarks for us.”

Pre-orders for double-CD, vinyl, and digital editions of this epic Melvins milesone, as well as an official street date for the companion film, have not yet been announced. Don’t worry, though: you can check out a thoroughly disgusting trailer for the movie down below while you’re waiting (Ipecac: optional).
