We have no federal government right now, and that means a lot of things. Let’s discuss the least important thing that this all means: you are going to need a soundtrack to your newly anarchist life. Something bleak, dark, and noisey, something that epitomizes the apathy of this downhill nation. It should kind of rock out too, just because.
Oh look, Mika Vainio (Pan Sonic) and Stephen O’Malley (sunn O)))) have a new project (under the moniker ÄÄNIPÄÄ) with an LP coming out via Editions Mego titled Through a Pre-Memory. This should do the trick.
Pan Sonic and sunn O))) first collaborated together on a Suicide cover version for a Blast First Petite series in 2007/8, and Mika and Stephen decided to collaborate further with what eventually became the ÄÄNIPÄÄ sessions. The record was tracked at Einstürzende Neubauten’s Andere Baustelle Ton studio in Berlin and mixed at Avast! (Soundgarden, Earth) in Seattle, and it captures the signature motifs of both players, resulting in a crushing block of sound rich with distortion and gritty unholiness.
Sure, the record isn’t due out until November 11, a time by which our government will likely regroup. But there’s at least a SoundCloud sample below that sounds as sweet as a Congressman’s face being smashed by your foot. Preorder here.
